Meatball Recipe Accompaniments

Once you’ve got your meatballs coated in our tasty sauce, what else can you bring to the meal? It’s true that this dish can be enjoyed on its own, but those who want to expand upon this culinary creation may want to include something else on the side. Here are some options.
Rice - A small dish of rice always pairs well with meat dishes, especially recipes that include sauce.
Bread - In Spain, bread is typically served with every meal and can always be found on the table. The Spaniards often enjoy dipping it into whatever sauce is left on the plate after the meat has been eaten.
Fries - Who doesn’t love a serving of fries? They’re even more enjoyable alongside something meaty and, of course, with a tasty sauce.
Vegetables - Whether roasted or fired, a serving of vegetables helps to create a balanced and nutritious meal.
Salad - Those who know their Spanish cuisine will know how common it is for a typical Spanish dish to be served alongside a salad. This is found all over the Mediterranean. Salads also give you a light and nutritious option, ideal for summer evenings.

Methods of Cooking Meatballs

People often wonder, is it better to fry meatballs in the pan or bake them in the oven? It’s all about preference, but each method has its own benefits. By baking them in the oven, your meatballs will have a slightly more crunchy exterior. Frying them in the pan, however, allows for a subtle caramelization and is ideal for cooking in sauce.
For this recipe, we recommend frying, but for alternatives, baking is an option, especially if you want to cook larger amounts of meatballs. More meat can fit on a tray than in a pan, and baking is a simple process that requires very little monitoring.

Types of Meatballs

American-style meatballs are usually larger than other varieties. Italian meatballs are renowned for their flavor and are typically made with seasonings such as Parmesan cheese and oregano. Swedish meatballs also have seasoning, but opt for a different kind, usually nutmeg and allspice. These popular styles of meatballs may all look similar, but if you try all of them, you are bound to notice differences in flavor.

How Many Meatballs Per Person?

When you have something to accompany them, six meatballs per person is often enough. If the meatballs are small, you can increase this to ten. If there aren’t enough meatballs to go around, there’s no need to worry. Just increase the amounts of the accompanying ingredients, whether that's rice, bread, salad, fries, or vegetables.

The Best Size Meatball

A good rule of thumb is that meatballs should be no larger than a golf ball and no smaller than a large cherry. This, of course, is a matter of preference and there are plenty of chefs out there who like to break the rules and make meatballs however they see fit.
