What is an Enchilada?

An enchilada is a traditional Mexican dish made from corn tortilla wrapped around a tasty filling and covered with a savory sauce. Filler ingredients vary depending on the recipe, but they typically include meat, beans, vegetables, and a lot of cheese!

Enchilada Sauce

Different kinds of sauces can be used in enchilada recipes. The kind that is often referred to as ‘enchilada sauce’ is a red sauce known as ‘salsa roja’ or ‘mole roja’. This is made from a combination of herbs and spices, including chiles, onion, garlic, oregano, cumin, tomatoes, and others, to name a few. The sauce you use, however, is your choice.

Salsa brava in enchilada

Our enchilada recipe uses salsa brava The Tapas Sauces because we find it gives the enchilada dish a distinct kick and highly satisfying flavor combo. For those who may not be familiar with salsa brava, it comes from Spain and is one of the most popular tapas sauces in the Mediterranean country. Salsa brava blends olive oil, tomatoes, and paprika, in a way that results in a delightful taste and texture.

Where salsa brava comes from

Although salsa brava is found all over Spain, it’s particularly common in the southern regions and probably originated in Madrid. It’s a key component in the popular tapas dish known as ‘patatas bravas’ in which small blocks of diced potato are cooked and then topped with the much-loved sauce on a large plate for sharing or as a small alternative appetizer.

Enchilada Vs Burritos

Are you wondering what the difference is between an enchilada and a burrito? We’re happy to help. Enchiladas are made with corn tortillas, while burritos are made with flour. Not only that but enchiladas are smothered in sauce, which means they should be eaten with a fork. Burritos, on the other hand, are usually enjoyed as a handheld food.

The secret to good enchiladas

Here’s a quick tip that will get your enchiladas off to a tasty start. Fry the tortillas in a dash of oil before adding the fillings. This adds not only warmth but also a slightly cooked texture to the wraps, making the eating experience even more enjoyable.

Enchilada variations

Enchilada lovers will be pleased to know that there are more than 20 different kinds of enchiladas out there to try. Each one consists of a different ingredient combo. These combos typically consist of meats, cheese, beans, and veggies, and can be topped with cilantro, sliced avocado, red onions, or radishes. One of the reasons they’re so popular is that they can be easily adapted to fit the preferences of even the pickiest of eaters.

Experimental enchiladas

Once you’ve got to grips with one or two of the typical enchilada recipes, there’s plenty of room for experimentation. Just switch out the ingredients you like the least for things that satisfy your taste buds more. As long as the core ingredients are kept roughly the same, you’ll find that enchiladas are delicious dishes that are easy to make and can maneuver in various flavor directions.
